It's nice to be back! So today, since I haven't really been watching films in the past week, I am going to kinda reflect on my recent watching of the show "Steins;Gate." This is an anime series that I just found out was actually adapted from a visual novel, something that I was not aware of before but explains so many things, but more about that later.
So for anyone who watches my youtube videos, you will know that we took a break from uploading for a day and called it "Steins;Date" in honorary celebration of the fact that I actually watched it all after months of Anthony Begging me to watch it. (Just so you guys know, we are actually gonna celebrate that annually now). So I think you guys can tell before hand that the fact that I stayed up all night watching the show is a testament to how good it is.
So here is a basic plot summary without getting too spoilery (Because this is a show you DON'T want spoiled): A mad scientist (wanna-be that is) starts up a lab in his apartment, and starts to focus on time travel. Some stuff happens, obviously time travel will be introduced somehow, but most importantly it takes a cool little spin on time travel. It's not entirely different from the popular multiverse explanation, but it tweaks its presentation in a really cool way. I don't really wanna say more on that.
What I do wanna talk about is how GOD DAMN AWESOME ASS COOL this thing is! This is a unique anime, and very rarely do I say that about weird fan-servicey, all the girls are "sexy" anime. It's not only very imaginative, but even aesthetically this show looks beautiful. The animation is superb, the voice acting is spot on, really this has had a lot of work put into it. I think my personal favorite part about it are the characters. Like I said, this is clearly an anime where there is one guy/17 girls, and the girls just happen to be anime hot and just happen to make some oddly sexy poses every once in a while. I thought that would irritate me, but to my genuine surprise that comes into play very rarely. Yes, it happens on occasion, but usually its subtle (though not all of the times, and those times are kinda annoying, in my opinion). Surprisingly, for an anime from this genre, the women are actually real people and not just shy eye candy. Their characters are really, really well developed.
Now my issues with the show do have weight. For one, there is a theme of romance that starts to come in as the show progresses that I was not expecting when I started, and honestly that kinda annoyed me. Don't think of me as a femenazi here because I'm not, all I'm saying is that I'm tired of this dumb romance where the woman is just swayed by the man, and she is powerless. Why couldn't this woman who has been set up as an equal to the man as a character just be a great friend?! WHY WAS THERE A ROMANCE?! It's just irritating that they clearly set this character up this way, but then they just throw it out to go into cliche. For what it's worth, the romance was not bad. The characters are good and the dialogue is cool. It's bad in the way the film Daredevil was bad; its just annoying that it had to rip off every cliche of everything before it.
But other than that one outstanding thing, my complaints are minor. The fat guy character is annoying, though that is sorta the point. There are weird fan-service moments but I can get over it. Overall the pros vastly out-weigh the cons, and I highly recommend this series. I may be back with a review of the movie too, so hold onto your sideburns ;)
For those of you guys new to my reviews, I have a thing called a "list of bias" that I list on my tumblr. I rank every film that I review on it by how much I personally like it. While this will not go on it because it is specifically for films, I encourage all of you to check it out HERE!
