So without spoiling anything, the plot of this film is that this guy named Seth (Giovanni Ribisi) is part of a business that sells stocks, or some kind of business shenanigans. What's a money anyways? This guy of course is a shining star from the start among the interchangeable, soft glowing embers of the crowd, a real life prodigy. Also on the side he must balance out his relationship with his father, which is on the brink of failure due to his less than admirable business practices. But of course, he finds out that everything is not what it seems...
So what did I think of the film? Well, I'll start with the cons. To start, I know the characters in the film are designed to be un-likable, but honestly the characters are just such huge a-holes that I really had trouble looking past it. I'll put it this way, this film is made for another social group that isn't mine, AKA non-introverts. I just had a harder time identifying in that regard. To get an idea of it, think Wolf of Wallstreet, except rarely funny. There are funny moments, but not many. That's really my only major drawback to this film. The only other setbacks would be that there are some annoying characters, and the early 2000's feel that I mentioned before borders on irritating.
What this film DOES bring, however, is a very cleverly written film about greed, the nature of greed, and if it is actually what we think it is. I don't want to get into too much about the themes of the film, but this film actually says some extremely interesting things through metaphor. If you go and watch this film, pay attention to the similarities in dialogue through the film, and you will see some cool ideas conveyed. Man, I wish I could talk about what I interpreted, but that would be spoilery.
Now I gotta say that there were two main performances that I particularly enjoyed, and those are of Giovanni Ribisi as Seth, and Ron Rifkin as his father. Wow, these two pair well in their roles. Just listen to their dialogue through the film. There is one scene in particular towards the end where the tension between them climaxes and I was blown away by it. Otherwise I didn't really care much for any of the other performances. Vin Diesel felt out of place to me honestly, why was he even there? You gotta go voice Groot Vin! You'll be late! Get into the Vinmobile! Is it low on gas? Does it take DIESEL?!?! AAAAAAHHHhhhhooh.... I'm sorry guys, you didn't deserve that. But really he wasn't bad in this film, just... weirdly there. Ben Affleck was a cool addition for the 10 minutes he was important, but he hardly did anything besides yell at a bunch of post-pubescents hopped up on dope. But that is really it, no other performances really stood out to me.
Overall I definitely recommend this film to everyone except to people who will have a hard time getting over the annoying a-hole-ness of 90% of the cast. I was able to get over it, but introverts like myself who are not film geeks may not be able to take it.
Thanks for reading my stuff guys, it's really cool to be back and be able to sorta have a voice again. If you guys wanna see what I call the “List of Bias,” click HERE and look to the right. It's exactly what it seems, a list of my favorite films that I have reviewed. It's a place where I can just organize my opinions and just leave my voice out there. No film is necessarily better over the others, It's just, well, my bias!
